36 GRAMS

August 11, 2016

"STOP EATING SO MUCH!" (In twi of course- Ghana Native Language) "STOP EATING CANDY and COOKIES" That's what I got an earful of for ALL of my life. From my father.  My father raised me not to eat candy, chips, McDonald's. There wasn't any kind of good snacks in the house as a kid. I had a boring childhood. (So I thought.) I now know why he did it. I thank him for it. He always told me sweets weren't  good and banned it. Literally... I was afraid to eat anything sweet or any junk food. Guess what? I never asked for it. I knew better. There was always food in the house and we never ate out. Only time I could indulge as a kid was holidays and birthdays. (If my dad wasn't around) Most of the time he was but even when he wasn't around I still had that fear. That conditioned me. Even as a 22 year old. I always watch what I eat. All the time. It's what I was raised on. I will always do it. I will always read about how to make the body function efficiently. It's the lifestyle my Father has instilled in me. I will continue to instill the same into my future children. Most parents aren't aware and if they are they don't understand how important it is. Obesity.
Obesity is terrible and it’s a growing issue. I don’t know just from news and articles online. I am personally dealing with it. My little brother is overweight. He is my half brother. (Same father. Different Mother.) They have been divorced for some years now. He is 13 years old. He’s a great kid. Everyone loves him. He goes over to my dads every weekend. That is not enough times to have someone always in your ear about eating to much. He is slowly starting to understand and that's what counts. Kids his age think they know it all. So they don’t want to listen. I won’t give up. I’ll keep him knowledgeable on the issue and ways to decrease his weight. It’s a serious issue. Some think obesity is genetics. Well yeah it’s going to be genetics if it has been happening since the 1970’s. Now were talking about a generation of obesity that has been created and passed down. Some are trying their hardest to lose weight but aren’t achieving results and they don’t know why. I am here to declare that YOU have the power to change. I am here to help. So you’re better able to help someone else. Now continuous system of awareness has been created. It works by itself because everyone is gaining knowledge on the issue at hand. Knowing why it’s happening. How to create a habit of great health. Being healthy isn’t just for athletes. (Their diets are great for short term. Not long term.) Health is a LIFESTYLE. A great habit formed over time. Ever heard of a documentary called “Fed Up” if you haven’t seen it. WATCH IT! I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s a very educational film. SUGAR IS BAD! Here’s the best part. IT’S IN EVERYTHING! “REDUCED” this. “REDUCED” that. So what does that really mean? “LETS MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE!” That’s what that means. The food industry cares about money. Not the health & well-being of its customers. 1977. That is when it was realized that obesity was growing. More and more people were becoming over weight. It’s an epidemic. At least they noticed. So what do they do? They “reduced” and take out the fat out of food products (Thinking this is the solution.) If there’s no fat in foods then it taste like cardboard and bland. (I wouldn’t want to eat that shit either.) “LET’S ADD MORE SUGAR.” Sugar is a drug. It’s addicting. That’s why it’s hard for people to stop eating. SUGAR is in EVERYTHING!!
EVERYONE buys cereal, granola bars, pop tarts, the “reduced” this, the “reduced” that, the “healthy” everything. In reality it’s not healthy folks. WAKE UP! Here’s the sad part. We can’t get away from it. IT IS EVERYWHERE. You know this now. ACCEPT IT. We are ALL being poisoned. We have been since the 1970’s. The overdose of sugar is killing us. When sugar is eaten it gets turned into FAT (IF ITS NOT USED.) GO WORK OUT. INSULIN ALERT!!! INSULIN ALERT!!! Insulin is now way to HIGH. High insulin levels does the body BAD. It blocks the signal (“I am full”) to the brain. So now your brain thinks the body is starving. Guess what? EAT. EAT. EAT. EAT. EAT some more. Now you’re getting heavier and heavier and you don’t even know why. How about this? Next time you eat something look at the nutrition facts and tell me what percentage of sugar you’ll be taking in for your daily value. There’s NO percent. They don’t even tell you. We’re only supposed to be consuming 6-9 teaspoons of sugar a DAY. 1 teaspoon of SUGAR is 4 GRAMS. The magic number is 36 grams of Sugar. 36 GRAMS OF SUGAR EVERYDAY. The nutrition facts may not show the percent of sugar (The FDA are coming around. They might add the percent), but it shows GRAMS. You have a number to work with now. It is your choice. Pop tart for example. (Pop Tarts are pretty good though.) We know they have two pastries. Just one of the pastries has 16 grams of sugar. 2 pop tarts. 32 grams. That’s most of the daily intake and the day hasn’t even started. It’s not good sugar either. Let’s not forget that. We need simple sugars. FRUITS. Perfect sweetooth killer. Don’t grab a pop tart. Grab a banana. (14 grams of sugar) PLUS its GREAT sugar and other nutrients that help you in other ways. The same goes for all the other fruits. Let’s keep it simple people. We’re not going to like hearing this but it has to be said. WE HAVE TO STOP EATING PROCESSED FOODS. You may ask “How do I know if I shouldn’t eat it?” I like to keep it simple. Here it is. If it is not a FRUIT or VEGETABLE do not eat it. SIMPLE. If you HAVE to have it. Eat only a little. Moderation is KEY! WITH EVERYTHING.
Here’s my philosophy. We buy foods thinking it’s healthy or because it’s cheap not realizing what we’re doing to our families and to ourselves. We think we’re saving money but we end paying money to PHARMA in the long run to buy medication to care for our bodies. (Even then, the medication makes us worse or creates something we never had. Guess what? More medication.) A disease we formed over time from the overeating of processed foods. YES. Healthy is expensive. (If you shop at WHOLE FOODS.) Shop at your local farmers markets. (It’s cheaper.) Look it up. (GOOGLE: Local Farmers Market) You can get a real good deal on a bundle of food from farmers and there’s your meal for the week. We need to make FARMERS a big deal. They do so much and we don’t even realize it. Let’s help them out. Whilst at the same time bettering our lives and living a healthy lifestyle.
Make dinner plans ahead of time. So you won’t be tempted to buy fast foods. Planning. That’s the hard part. Doing all the planning and looking up the markets close to you. Trust me when I say this. IT IS WORTH IT. Do it for your future kids. Do it for your Future grandkids. DO IT FOR THE FUTURE. That’s all you need to do to lead a healthy lifestyle.  CREATE GOOD HABITS. That’s it. SIMPLE. SELF-CONTROL. MODERATION. EVEN RATIO. (MORE WORKOUT: LESS EATING)
ABOLISHING OBESITY. It all starts individually. One person making the better choice for their family can flip this obesity generation that has been happening for so long into a generation on committing to a healthy lifestyle. Only then are we able to live a loooong lived life. Fruitfully……
